Service- User Event – Information for attendees.
Who is the event for?
This event is for Service-Users (SU) i.e. individuals who use health care services. The services could include primary care or hospital services. Service users can have one-off or extensive experiences with health care, either directly or indirectly (as a carer for others requiring health care e.g. parents of children; or carers). Service Users can include groups or charities or organisations that represent patient groups.
What will happen at the event?
Service users will work in small groups, sat at tables with a member of university staff, to tell us their perspectives of health care & partnership working and how this can positively influence the future of nursing and midwifery education. Service users will be invited to share/discuss how their perspectives can make nursing and midwifery education more patient centred. This event is not a patient support group nor a forum to raise concerns about unsafe practice, instead it is for SU to share their expertise to meaningfully improve nursing and midwifery education at the university of Southampton.
Staff will present some introductory information about the nursing and midwifery education at the event. There will be opportunities to ask questions and find out more about ongoing engagement with our educational activities. At the end we will provide lunch as a thank you for your contribution and you will be able to claim for travel expenses.
What is expected of SU?
Service Users will come prepared to share their perspectives in a group setting and brief notes will be made about these by the university staff. Service Users will be prepared to speak/communicate their perspectives, to listen to other SU and work together with university staff to identify what are the key messages from SU. All information shared will be anonymous and no recording equipment will be used. Themes from the event will be used to inform the future education and if you would like to continue to be involved in the future please do speak to a member of staff.
Why is the event being held?
The Professional Regulator (the Nursing and Midwifery Council – NMC) requires universities that run nursing and midwifery courses to engage with patients/service users, to ensure the education delivered prepares students for partnership working with patients upon registration e.g. being a qualified nurse or midwife. We will be expected to provide evidence of this meeting and how it has been used to inform the education to the professional regulator. We will take a register of attendees at the event for the NMC purposes.
Where is the event being held?
At the university of Southampton on the Highfield campus in Building 100. We are on the 4th floor of the building, which is a modern building with good access and lifts. The room is large with approximately 10 tables and we have booked a smaller room on another level of the building in case individuals need another separate space. .
